Who we are
The Norwegian Republican Association (Norge som republikk) are Norway’s largest non-partisan anti-monarchy organization and a member of the Alliance of European Republican Movements (AERM).
Our goal
We strive towards the ultimate goal of abolishing the monarchy in Norway and replacing it with a parliamentary republic.
We work to expand the anti-monarchist (republican) movement in Norway. Recent polls show that more people are on the fence, and that the monarchy’s popularity is dwindling. Some of the most democratic and well run countries in Europe are republics – Finland, Iceland, and Ireland – and their presidencies costs a fraction of that of the Norwegian monarchy.
Why abolish the monarchy?
- The monarchy is inherently undemocratic. A democratic country should elect its head of state.
- The monarchy elevates some people above others simply because of their birth. It is contrary to Norwegian values of equality.
- It is archaic and expensive. The annual cost is around 600 million NOK (50 mill EUR).
- It is stated in the Constitution that heirs to the Norwegian throne have to be Christian, heterosexual, and married with biological children. This does not reflect Norway’s liberal values and cultural diversity.
- The King has immunity from the law, and his children answer only to him – nobody should be above the law.
- The Palace and Royal Family is secretive. It is exempt the Freedom of Information Act (Offentleglova). Corruption blossoms under conditions of secrecy. Democracy dies in darkness.
- It promotes an unhealthy respect for people with power. It is hard to criticize people who have royal titles, medals, and money.
- We get what we are given. There is no retirement age and no possibility to remove an unfit monarch.
- Monarchy allows parents to contiue to have real power over their grown children. They are never really allowed to grow up and be independent of their parents.
- It is an abuse of human rights. Royal children grow up in golden cages, in the full glare of the media spotlight, and with no control over their own life and role in society.
What we do
We have a broad approach in order to create a principled debate about the monarchy.
Unlike most monarchists, we have an informed, informative, and factual approach, and are not focused on adulation of members of the royal family (or adulation of any presidents or elected officials – they aren’t perfect either). We believe that most Norwegians are not allowed to reflect over what the monarchy implies, and that they have a romantic ideal that is not based on information. The younger members of Norwegian society are encouraged to adore and accept the royal family and the institution of monarchy. The institution thereby ensures its continuance.
In order to reach out to different groups of Norwegians, we are active on various new media platforms (Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Mastadon, Bluesky). We participate in public debate in the press and send out press releases to create media attention.
We also have regular meetings for members, sell our own merchandise, and arrange public demonstrations.
We have an active dialogue with politicians, and in particular the youth organizations. We work towards getting more support for a republic in the Norwegian parliament.
What you can do
If you have any ideas or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us on post@republikk.no. We are always looking for new approaches or lines of argument.
Participate in the debate in social media. You are welcome to share articles and thoughts. Remember our rules for communication! We don’t encourage personal attacks on the royals or their supports.
Write articles and submit them to your local press, and especially if you have connections. We are happy to help with writing, editing, and submitting articles.
We are also always looking for people who can be locally active in different parts of Norway, or to join the board.
